Exosome therapy is offered by a growing number of clinics in Tokyo, and the claims made for it vary widely. This article sets out what the treatment involves and what you can verify for yourself before booking. We are Tokyo Beauty Master Clinic., a regenerative medicine clinic two minutes from Roppongi Station, with treatment plans filed with the Kanto-Shinetsu Regional Bureau of Health and Welfare.
What exosomes are
Exosomes are small vesicles released by cells. They carry proteins and other molecules between cells, and research describes them as part of how cells communicate. In a clinic setting they are given as an IV drip, an injection into a specific area, or a nasal spray.
What is sold as "exosome therapy" is not one single product. Preparations differ in the tissue they come from, where they were manufactured, and how they are measured. Those three points are what you can actually check.
Where the preparation comes from
Preparations in Japan are commonly derived from umbilical cord, dental pulp or adipose tissue. Each source is described as having its own characteristics, but studies comparing sources head to head in humans are limited. Treat the source as information about the product, not as a ranking.
- Which tissue the preparation is derived from
- Where it was manufactured, and whether the facility can be named
- Whether the clinic can explain the donor screening that was carried out
How to read "billions of particles"
Particle counts are quoted in advertising, but they cannot be compared unless the unit is the same. "50 billion" per millilitre and "7.5 billion" per vial are not measured on the same basis. Before comparing two clinics, ask per what.
| What to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Per vial or per millilitre | The same product can look several times larger |
| Total volume after reconstitution | Needed to work out the amount per session |
| What the stated purity refers to | Purity can be defined in more than one way |
What a session involves
At our clinic an IV drip takes roughly 30 to 60 minutes, and the cost starts at ¥88,000 for an exosome IV drip. The price depends on the preparation used. A doctor examines you first, explains the treatment, the cost, the safety information and the matters relating to unapproved drugs, and then you decide.
※ All treatment is provided privately. Japanese public health insurance does not cover it.
The legal position in Japan
Stem cell treatments and PRP are handled under the Act on the Safety of Regenerative Medicine, which requires a treatment plan to be filed. Exosome preparations fall outside that Act, because they are not processed cells. That is not a judgement about quality; it means the public filing system does not cover them, so what the clinic can show you matters more.

What we will learn from here
Research describes exosomes as carriers of signals between cells. Long-term outcomes in humans are still being studied, and comparisons between sources and between routes are being built up. As more is published, there will be more that patients can compare directly. How you feel differs from person to person, and no particular result is guaranteed.
